In Germany, Riesling is the King of Wines. We will sample several Rieslings ranging from sweet dessert wines to dry food friendly wines. We will also taste wines from other grape varieties including, Spätburgunder, Blaufränkisch, Gewürztraminer and more. In Austria, the aromatic white wine, Grüner Veltliner rules and the easy drinking Blauer Zweigelt is the leading red wine grape.
German wine differs from wines of other countries ... it is light, lively and fruity, thanks to Germany's unique climatic and geological conditions. The diversity of German wine stems from the many soil types and grape varieties. There is no "uniform" type or style of German wine and this diversity is reflected in Germany's 13 wine-growing regions.
The vineyards in Austria lie in the east and southeast of the country. Amongst the wines produced here, white wines unquestionably make up the larger portion – cultivated in 70% of the vineyards. Nevertheless, red wine has come to represent 30% of the vineyards in recent years.
We will cover some basic topics relating to wine appreciation. Taste and compare several wines from Germany and Austria along with some great food. This is the perfect place for wine beginners to learn about wine and why it can be a life long, enjoyable experience. Experienced wine lovers can also benefit by using this evening to brush up on their wine knowledge and tasting skills. There is always something to learn about wine.
